In celebration of his 60th Birthday, Sir Richard Branson has today announced that he will be kitesurfing the English channel along with his friends and family with the support of Virgin Active and Flexifoil.
Richard, never one to shy away from a challenge has thrown down the gauntlet to the big six zero by setting himself up to become the oldest person to kitesurf the English Channel, from Dungeness to the French coast.
Being an extremely competent kitesurfer, Richard is already really excited by this challenge:
“Kitesurfing is one of my favourite sports. I absolutely love the amazing rush you get when going at high speeds, in high winds, with the most beautiful kite acting as your only guide. I know that kitesurfing across the channel will not be quite the same as kitesurfing in the beautiful waters of the Caribbean but I can’t think of anything I rather do, with my family and friends, to celebrate turning 60!"
The crossing, estimated to take up to six hours dependent on conditions, stretches 24.4 miles of one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Pushed by the team at Virgin Active, Richard has been busy preparing and training for this epic adventure.
Richard will be joined on the crossing by a host of his friends and family, including his two children Sam and Holly, as well as our very own Anthony van Dort and Aaron Hadlow.
